Last Monday I got home after dark and closed up the ladies, as usual.  I counted them, made sure they were all there, and locked them in for the night.  The next morning when I let them out, they greeted me and hopped out of the coop like they do every morning, but I noticed that one black and white hen was missing some feathers by her tail.  No biggie.  That happens; they molt, they peck them out, it’s nothing to worry about.  Then as I turned to walk back to the house, I saw Molly sniffing a giant pile of black and white feathers.  Uh-oh.

Weekend Plans

So there’s this little series of books, maybe you’ve heard of them? They’re called The Hunger Games Trilogy?

I’m so out of the loop on what’s popular with the masses.  I don’t listen to the radio, I don’t watch TV on the TV (I watch it sans commercials on Hulu), and heck, we don’t even have real cable, just the local channels.  So when the whole world is abuzz about something or another, I have no idea.  Which is why I was shocked (SHOCKED!) to learn that it wasn’t just me and Luke who liked The Hunger Games.  Who knew!?

My mom sent me a text message the other morning which read: “Could you please update your blog so I’ll know what you’re up to?”

This text came in the day after my friend Paula told me she had a very vivid dream that I had published a book of all of the craft projects I’d been working on in secret, which was the reason I hadn’t been blogging in so long.

Sadly, no, I’m not working on a book, although that would be awesome, it’s just that I haven’t been up to much at all.   Continue reading →

Today is February first and the weather was glorious; it reached into the 60s. After last year’s miserable winter, I’d say that a day like today deserves a toast. How about we toast with my new favorite drink, the BLT?

Word on the street (or on the internet, to be more exact) was that Bulleit Bourbon was delicious. The problem was that no one told the package stores in Connecticut and I’ve been searching for it since the end of summer. I finally spotted it on the shelf of my local shop and grabbed a bottle this past weekend.

So then… what do I do with bourbon?  Gin drinks, rum drinks, even tequila drinks—I’ve got you covered, but for bourbon drinks, I needed some help.  I went straight to the source: and that’s where I found my new favorite.

It’s simple, it’s tart, and it’s surprisingly refreshing.  It’s a BLT (bourbon, lemon, tonic).

(recipe from

1 1/2 ounce Bulleit bourbon
1 lemon slice

Fill a rocks glass halfway with ice, add bourbon, squeeze lemon and toss in, then top with tonic and stir.

Now raise your glass and make a toast to beautiful weather and 60-degree winter days. Welcome February!

Exciting and New

Rather than actual blogging, I’ve been spending the last several hours doing some housekeeping, spiffing the site up a bit, and hopefully making it so pretty here that it makes me want to come back and write more often.

I’ve simplified the sidebar and moved most of the shouty “FOLLOW ME” icons to the page titled “ELSEWHERE” which you can find at the top of this page above my big ol’ head.

I still have some clean-up to do and my Etsy shop needs a new badge, but I think I like the way it’s looking so far.

So… most importantly, what do you think?

Let Me Show You My Awesome Things

I have mixed feelings about writing about the Christmas presents I received. On one hand, it’s very CHECK OUT ALL THE STUFF I GOT!!!, and on the other, it’s also, hey, check out the cool stuff I got that you should get, too.

(As a side note before I move on to the show-and-tell, do you have an Amazon wishlist yet? You should. My mom even has one now (hi Mom!) and she can attest to the success of having a wishlist as much as I can. They are awesome for the receiver—because you get the stuff you actually want—and also for the giver—because sometimes I have no freaking idea what to get you for Christmas.  The two awesome things below are gifts that were a direct result of my Amazon wishlist.)

This adorable thing is a BookBook iPhone case. On the outside it looks like a small, leather-bound book (everyone asks about my bible) but on the inside, it’s an iPhone case, ID holder, and it has a small slot where you can stash some cash. It’s been my little purse/wallet since I unwrapped it on Christmas. You can fold the cover over so you can still talk on it, like a phone, but since I put my phone in it I’ve realized that no one actually calls me anymore. I might have gotten three calls in the past almost two weeks. My one teeny tiny little complaint is that there’s no hole for the camera lens so I have to slide it up, out of the case to take a picture.  But otherwise, it’s $60 of pure awesome.

This random collection of images is illustrating the completely magical, amazing piece of technology called an Eye-Fi memory card. This bit of wonderment is a regular-looking SD card for your camera that will pick up the wi-fi signal in your home and automatically download the pictures from your camera to your computer. Seriously. Take a picture and within seconds a window on your computer opens to show that it’s downloading the picture. The setup was quick and easy and so far it’s working like a dream.  You need to be within your assigned wi-fi area to download pics, so if you’re away from home taking shots, just turn the camera back no once you get home, and BAM! The pictures upload automatically.  No cords, no clunky interface, just magic.  You cal also set your Eye-Fi card to automatically upload your pictures to Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr as you take them, but that seems a bit dangerous, so I’ve disabled that handy function for now.

I also asked for and got a food dehydrator, an ironing board cover, and WeatherTech Floor Liners for my car but I’ll spare you the excitement of talking about those things. So what sort of awesomeness did Santa bring you?

Happy new year! Tell me, did you make any new year’s resolutions?  I’m not a resolution-maker or a life lister, but there have been two things that I’ve been thinking about since the new year rolled around (a whole five days ago) and I would like to proclaim to everyone here that, if nothing else, I will accomplish these two goals in the year 2012.

1. Make a terrarium.

Big, lofty goal, I know. I keep seeing these gorgeous terrariums (terraria?) online and I really want to give it a try.  I think I can even do it for almost nothing, using the jars and plants I already have around the house. I’m gonna do it.  2012: Year of the Terrarium!

2. Go to Canada.

I have somehow managed to make it nearly 36 years without ever setting foot into our maple-flavored, hockey-loving country to the north. I intend to fix that this year.  The only problem is that Canada is huge and daunting and I have no idea where to go or what to do.  Have you been there?  Please tell me what I absolutely must see and where I must go.

So that’s what I’ll be working on this year, (provided that world doesn’t end). How about you?  Any 2012 goals?
